Abstract

For a long time, domestic tourism in Russia has developed along an extensive model. Travel has been perceived as a way to change scenery, take a break from routine, and enjoy a dose of visual comfort. The classic excursion program as the Golden Ring with varnished churches, the gorgeous St. Petersburg, or the Black Sea embankments have been working perfectly. The era of “hitting the highlights” when tourists acted as silent consumers of images, is fading into the past forever. For a long time, domestic tourism has been existing within a “checklist” paradigm: Red Square – done, the Hermitage – checked, Lake Baikal – on the list of visited places. The classic sightseeing tour with its memorized dates and views from the bus window increasingly evokes a feeling of tourist asphyxiation in the modern traveler. It is being replaced by a demand for authenticity, participation, and intellectual effort. Russian tourism is undergoing a fundamental shift and “complex” routes are taking center stage, along with a radical rethinking of the excursion format itself.
